THE BIG IDEA: In order to impact people for God’s glory, we must undeniably display that Jehovah is truly God.

How can our testimonies show that Jehovah is truly our God?

• When Jehovah is truly YOUR God, you will attribute both blessings and hardships to the hand of God.
• When Jehovah is truly YOUR God, your testimony will have very little to do with YOU.
• When Jehovah is truly your God, His reputation will precede you.

In 1769, Newton began a Thursday evening prayer service. For almost every week’s service, he wrote a hymn to be sung to a familiar tune. Newton challenged Cowper also to write hymns for these meetings, which he did until falling seriously ill in 1773. Newton later combined 280 of his own hymns with 68 of Cowper’s in what was to become the popular Olney Hymns. Among the well-known hymns in it are “Amazing Grace,” “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken,” “How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds,” “O for a Closer Walk with God,” and “There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood.”

(Ex 17:9) When the assault was made, the people were commanded to exert themselves. The message was given, “Go, choose out men, and fight with Amalek.” Israel never fought with Egypt. God fought for them, and they held their peace. When we are in our natural state under the bondage of sin, it is of very little use for us to fight against it; the only way of escape from the reigning power of sin is through the precious blood and the working of divine grace. But this was a different case. The children of Israel were not under the power of Amalek-they were free men; and so we are not under the power of sin any longer. The yoke of sin has been broken by God’s grace from off our necks, and now we have to fight not as slaves against a master, but as freemen against a foe. Moses never said to the children of Israel while they were in Egypt, “Go, fight with Pharaoh.” Not at all: it is God’s work to bring us out of Egypt and make us his people, but when we are delivered from bondage, although it is God’s work to help us, we must be active in our cause. This inspiring expression of praise found in nearly every hymnal was originally written in 1225 by one of the most interesting figures all of church history. Giovanni Bernardone, who was better know as Saint Francis of Assisi, was a mystic, medieval monk who spent his lifetime as an itinerant evangelist, preaching and helping the poor people of Italy. Saint Francis was born in Assisi, Italy, in 1182. After an early indulgent life as a soldier, he reformed his ways dramatically, at the age if twenty-five, and determined to serve God by imitating the selfless life of Christ in all that he did. Although his family were people of considerable means, Francis scorned the possession of material goods, denounced his inherited wealth, denied himself everything but the most meager necessities, and devoted himself completely to moving about his area as Christ’s representative. At the age of twenty-eight Francis founded the influential Franciscan Order of Friars, which developed into a large movement of young men and women who adopted his religious beliefs and ascetic style of life.

Saint Francis was known as a great lover of nature, seeing the hand of God in all creation. One of the well-known master painting from this time was done by the famous Italian artist, Giotto, and show Saint Francis feeding the birds . The following well-known verse was written in tribute to this man:

Saint Francis came to preach – with smiles he met the friendless, fed the poor,
freed a trapped bird, led home a child; Although he spoke no word-his text, God’s
love, the town did not forget.

Note: This particular hymn, “All Creature of our God and King” said to have been written one hot summer day in 1225, one year before his death, while Francis was very ill and suffering the loss of his eyesight.
