Excerpt from John Newton’s Life

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

Below is an excerpt we read together on Sunday. You can view the entire article here.

In 1769, Newton began a Thursday evening prayer service. For almost every week’s service, he wrote a hymn to be sung to a familiar tune. Newton challenged Cowper also to write hymns for these meetings, which he did until falling seriously ill in 1773. Newton later combined 280 of his own hymns with 68 of Cowper’s in what was to become the popular Olney Hymns. Among the well-known hymns in it are “Amazing Grace,” “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken,” “How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds,” “O for a Closer Walk with God,” and “There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood.”

All-Sufficient God

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Puritan prayer that we read together last Sunday:

The world is before my this day.
and I am weak and fearful,
but I look to thee for strength;

If I venture forth alone I stumble and fall,
but on the beloved’s arms I am firm as the eternal bliss

If left to the treachery of my heart I shall shame thy name,
but if enlightened, guided, upheld by thy Spirit,
I shall bring thee glory.

Be thou my arm to support,
my strength to stand, my light to see,
my feet to run, my shield to protect,
my sword to repel, my sun to warm.

To enrich me will not diminish thy fullness;
All thy lovingkindness is in thy Son,
I bring him to thee in the arms of faith,
I urge his saving name as the one who died for me.
I plead his blood to pay my debts of wrong.

Accept his worthiness for my unworthiness,
his sinlessness for my transgressions,
his purity for my uncleanness,
his sincerity for my guile,
his truth for my deceits,
his meekness for my pride,
his constancy for my backslidings,
his love for my enmity,
his fulness for my emptiness,
his fullness for my treachery,
his obedience for my lawlessness,
his glory for my shame,
his devotedness for my waywardness,
his holy life for my unchaste ways,
his righteousness for my dead works,
his death for my life.

Martin Luther and Congregational Singing

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

One of the important benefits of the Reformation Movement was the rediscovery of congregational singing. Luther had strong convictions about the use and power of sacred (God focused) music. He expressed his convictions in this way, ” if any man despises music, as all fanatics do, for him I have no liking ; for music is a gift and grace of God , not an invention of men. Thus it drives out the devil and makes people cheerful. Then one forgets all wrath, impurity and other devices.

The single most powerful hymn of the Protestant Reformation Movement was Luther’s “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, ” based on Psalm 46. This hymn became the battle cry of the people, a great source of strength and inspiration even for those who were martyred for their convictions. This hymn has been translated into practically every known language and is regarded as one if the noblest and most classic example of Christian hymnody.

Surefire ways to raise kids who DO remember God

Friday, June 4th, 2010

1. Tell them how awesome God is b/c you really think He is
2. Clearly showing them that nothing is more important than God
3. Attending church as an overflow of your spiritual life
4. Praying like you really have a personal relationship with Him
5. Doing family devotions b/c God is so worthy of it.
6. Making sure that your passion for God surpasses any other passion in your life

Surefire ways to raise kids who don’t remember God

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

1.  Focus on what the Bible says they can’t do instead of what they can do
2.  Tell them all the things that displease God, instead of focusing on what pleases God.
3.  Doing God-stuff on Sundays and Wednesdays only
4.  Praying the same trite, formulaic, prayers in every setting
5.  Giving the impression that church is a hindrance in the schedule, and you try to get home as soon as it is over
6.  Doing family devotions because it is what you are supposed to do
7.  Having the name of God on your lips only when you are swearing
8.  Talking down about your church or pastors in front of your kids
9.  Discussing your frustrations with other church members in front of your kids
10. Getting more excited about hunting trips or shopping trips than doing something to serve God
11.  Talking more about anything…..than you do about God.

Check back tomorrow for surefire ways to raise kids who DO remember God.

Resources

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

from Zach Dietrich…

When it comes to Bible study the internet can be a complete waste of time, a dangerous snare of false teaching, and sometimes a source of helpful, rich, and free resources.  I’ll explore those ups and downs more another time, but for now here are three online resources that correspond to this week’s Bible reading.  As always, read with discernment.

Matthew 14 – InterVarsity Press Commentary.  Available from www.biblegateway.com

By providing for the crowds, Jesus showed himself greater than a human magician who could just heal some individuals or turn some stones into bread. At the least, Jesus was a prophet like Moses or Elisha (vv. 13-21; Ex 16:14-18; 2 Kings 4:42-44). But by treading on the sea, Jesus now takes a role that the Hebrew Bible had reserved for God alone (Job 9:8; see also Ps 77:19; Hab 3:15; Davies and Allison 1991:504). Nevertheless, as in an earlier storm scene, Matthew is interested here in teaching us not only Christology but also about the requisite faith for disciples (Mt 8:26). Of all the disciples, Peter alone begins to walk, but Jesus regards even his faith as less than what a disciple should have… Continue reading.

“Sabbath” – Bible Dictionaries.  Available from www.bible.org

(From Easton’s Bible Dictionary).

The Sabbath, originally instituted for man at his creation, is of permanent and universal obligation. The physical necessities of man require a Sabbath of rest. He is so constituted that his bodily welfare needs at least one day in seven for rest from ordinary labour. Experience also proves that the moral and spiritual necessities of men also demand a Sabbath of rest. “I am more and more sure by experience that the reason for the observance of the Sabbath lies deep in the everlasting necessities of human nature, and that as long as man is man the blessedness of keeping it, not as a day of rest only, but as a day of spiritual rest, will never be annulled… Continue reading.

Psalm 1 – The Treasury of David by Charles Spurgeon.  Available from www.spurgeon.org

Here the gracious man is described both negatively (verse 1) and positively (verse 2). He is a man who does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly. He takes wiser counsel, and walks in the commandments of the Lord his God. To him the ways of piety are paths of peace and pleasantness. His footsteps are ordered by the Word of God, and not by the cunning and wicked devices of carnal men. It is a rich sign of inward grace when the outward walk is changed, and when ungodliness is put far from our actions. Continue reading.

Remember Me

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Here is a song that we used for Mother’s Day from the fantastic people at Sojourn.

Remember Me ( Prayer of Hannah ) words and music by Jamie Barnes

Remember me, Oh God
In my affliction
Your daughters call upon your name
I am not full of new wine, but of Holy Spirit
Tossed in the wake of my shame
If you read the lips of this silent prayer
Favor your servant, my aim to bear
No razor shall come to a single hair of our young ( I Sam 1:11 )

Hannah dedicated Samuel to the Lord for service in the temple. This is a reference to that transaction. While we don’t dedicate our children to the Lord we can make a commitment to be an example of Christ to them.

Let the joy that lives in me leap in your proximity ( Luke 1:41-45 )
Oh mothers of Israel behold the son who has opened the womb of the barren
you have opened the womb of the barren.
Remember me, Oh God
In my condition
Your daughters call upon your name
We do not fear the snow
We are draped in scarlet
Hued by the blood of the lamb.

Draped in scarlet Hued by the blood of the lamb is such a great expression to describe our standing with God the Father in Christ.

May we raise our children to call us blessed ( Prov 31:28)
and bathe them with tongues of righteousness ( Prov 31:26 )
as we will claim them back from the jackal’s breast ( Lamentations 4:3 )

Jeremiah was rebuking the Israelite mothers saying that Jackels (wild animals) took better care of their young than they did.

We will claim them back.

How Can I Keep From Singing

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Last Sunday we sang Chris Tomlin’s arrangement of How Can I Keep From Singing written by Robert Lowry in 1860. Below is Lowry’s original text.

My life flows on in endless song;

Above earth’s lamentation
I
hear the sweet though far off hymn

That hails a new creation:

Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear the music ringing;

It finds an echo in my soul—

How can I keep from singing?

What though my joys and comforts die?

The Lord my Savior liveth;

What though the darkness gather round!

Songs in the night He giveth:

No storm can shake my inmost calm

While to that refuge clinging;

Since Christ is Lord of Heav’n and earth,

How can I keep from singing?

I lift mine eyes; the cloud grows thin;

I see the blue above it;

And day by day this pathway smoothes

Since first I learned to love it:

The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,

A fountain ever springing:

All things are mine since I am His—

How can I keep from singing?
